Award Winning Geeks

Meet the Star Wars family, second place winner in the Chevron Halloween Circus' Best Family in Costume. We have Layla as Yoda (this is the third time she wore this costume), Alia as a Stormtrooper (forgive us. That mask is 28 years old), Bianca as a Jedi (or Han Solo when she's not holding a lightsabre), Tristan as young Anakin Skywalker and moi as myself. Hahaha! It was hard to see and breathe in that thing! Seriously, I felt like Dark Helmet himself! I almost tripped several times and gasped for air everytime I took the mask off.

I'm glad that my family enjoyed yesterday's festivities. The magician wasn't corny, the food was good, it was well-organized despite the rain. Everyone was game. Layla seemed to have a good time. She wasn't fussy at all. She really liked looking at the balloons, too. Tristan said the Chevron party was much better than the one he attended at the Palms Country Club on Sunday. There were four booths, each with a different theme and with games and prizes. It was cool that whether you won or lost a game, you got a prize and lots of candies. We got Star Wars Micro Machines, too. Everyone went home a winner! We're now looking forward to next year's Halloween activity.

Happy Halloween! And may the Force be with you!

Rose in Bloom

This is my new niece, Alyssa Rose da Silva Nielsen; photo was taken 30 minutes after she was born in the wee hours of the morning on 24 October 2006 (United Nations Day) to my cousin Leah and her hubby Mike.

Isn't she so pretty? Another child for us to spoil (snicker, snicker).

Welcome to cyber space, Alyssa!

A New Hope

Layla turned one yesterday! The Vargases and Ortegas celebrated with a simple lunch at the Asiana in Palms Country Club.

Soon after Layla's birthday lunch, she dressed up as Yoda and joined her brother Tristan (dressed as Jason from Friday the 13th) and cousin Riannon (dressed as the Corpse Bride, and winner of the Most Creative Costume) in a Halloween Spook Fest. Check them out! Riannon's mom, Jan, made the Corpse Bride costume herself! Amazing! I love the purple dreadlocks!

Here's Riannon with her prize, a windsock (it's inside the orange triangle) made by Bianca's friend Nina (the master costume maker!).

This afternoon, Layla, Tristan, and my sisters are joining my office's Halloween Circus. There's a prize for the Best Family in Costume. Thanks to Dexter (who lent me the helmet) and Nina (who lent me a cape), I'll be Darth Vader. Alia will be a Stormtrooper (yes, the helmet Papa bought back in 1978 is still alive!), Bianca said she will be "someone from the cantina", and Tristan will be a Jedi. Layla will reprise her role as Yoda. If all goes well, Yaya Dovic will be C3-PO. And if all goes according to plan, WE WILL WIN! (The Force runs strong in our family...).

How much cuter can a young padawan get? I love it that Layla's not old enough to complain about our costume choices for her. Hahaha! Begun, a new generation has, hrmm? Happy first birthday, my dear little Teapot!

The Skywalker Curse

I don't understand why everyone is so upset by this.

I thought it was hilrious!

I guess most people expect Daniel Radcliffe to be Harry Potter forever the way Mark Hamill has been immortalized as Luke Skywalker. I hope he breaks the mold. I know he can.

Keeping House

I spent the weekend watching the first season of House, M.D. on DVD (8 discs, roughly 3 episodes per disc). What else could I do? Typhoon Milenyo (international name Xangsane) literally blew into town, we lost electricity, and worse, we didn't have any water. Even The Palms Country Club and the Alabang Country Club ran out of water! The Alabang Town Centre was packed with people, but the generators weren't "strong" enough to power the airconditioners. So the best thing to do was to stay home and read by candlelight. When power was restored on Friday, we found out that it was limited to certain areas of our village. Some of my friends are still without electricity and water.

Despite our house having electricity, we still didn't have cable all weekend (we do now). Thank the good Lord for DVDs! (and Tita Shan for lending us House, M.D. Season One and Seinfeld Season Four the week before). Now, I desperately need a copy of House, M.D. Season Two because I can no longer wait for 10PM every Monday (it's not easy waking up at 5AM on Tuesdays, my car's color-coding day). I need to know what's happening at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital! And I'm not one to go on the internet and read spoilers, so the suspense is killling me!

Dr. House is an ass, but I love him. He reminds me of...well...me. What I don't understand is why young girls are so attracted to Hugh Laurie (Dr. House). I like Robert Sean Leonard (Dr. Wilson), and Jesse Spencer (Dr. Chase) has been growing on me. I don't know why.

To me, House, M.D. is not a patient-of-the-week medical drama. I doubt that it's meant to make the audience appreciate the medical practice or to serve as an intelligent late night soap opera to remind us how boring real life can be compared to television. I like how it explores human nature. I like how it explores Dr. House's nature. I like how it helps me read and understand other people. I like how it fixes me. Keep them coming, David Shore. Keep them coming.
